Do You Need to Level Your Floor First?

Usually yes. JD Flooring levels a subfloor before installing whenever it falls outside the flatness the flooring manufacturer requires, which is roughly 3/16 inch over 10 feet for vinyl plank, laminate and most hardwood, and as tight as 1/8 inch over 10 feet for large-format tile. Laid over dips and humps, a floor squeaks, gaps, cracks or pops apart within a year, and most manufacturers void the warranty when the subfloor was out of spec.

Levelling is the step homeowners never see and the one that decides whether a floor lasts. If Joey tells you your floor needs levelling first, it is not an upsell, it is the condition that makes the finished floor hold. Here is exactly when it is needed, how flat "flat enough" really is, and what happens when the step gets skipped.

"Flat" and "level" are not the same thing

Homeowners ask for a level floor, but installers care about a flat one, and the difference matters. Level means truly horizontal, like a full countertop. Flat means free of dips and humps, even if the whole floor tilts a little. An older North Bay home can sit slightly out of level and still take a beautiful floor, because what wrecks a floor is unevenness, not a gentle slope. JD Flooring measures flatness with a long straightedge and a level, watching for the gaps underneath, not whether a marble would roll across the room.

How flat does a floor actually need to be?

Flooring is not one-size-fits-all. Each material carries a published flatness tolerance the manufacturer will hold you to, and those numbers are the industry's, not JD Flooring's:

These are the same specs that decide whether your warranty stands, which is why they are not negotiable.

What actually goes wrong when you skip it

Installing over an uneven subfloor does not save money, it moves the cost to later:

On top of the physical failure, most manufacturers require documented flatness for their warranty, so a floor laid over an out-of-spec subfloor often carries no warranty at all.

Signs your subfloor needs levelling

How JD Flooring levels a floor

There is no single fix, so Joey matches the method to the problem:

Then he re-checks with the straightedge before the new floor goes down. This is the part a general contractor rushes and a specialist does not, and it is why JD Flooring backs its installation with a one-year workmanship warranty, valid when the floor was prepped and levelled to the specification Joey recommends. Done right, or it is not done.

Does levelling cost extra?

Levelling is priced with the job, by how far out of flat the subfloor is and how much area needs work. A tidy, flat floor needs little or none; a settled century home or a wavy basement slab needs more. Because JD Flooring is install-only, you buy your own flooring and pay for the labour and prep it takes to do it right, quoted up front with no surprises. Text a few photos of the space, and any spots that feel uneven, to 705-492-8461 and Joey will tell you what the floor needs.

Levelling questions

Levelling your floor: common questions

Q. Can't you just install the floor over the uneven subfloor?

Not when it is out of tolerance. The floor will separate, squeak or crack, and the manufacturer warranty is voided. Levelling first is what makes the finished floor last.

Q. What is the difference between a flat floor and a level floor?

Level is truly horizontal; flat is free of dips and humps. Floors need to be flat, not perfectly level. A slight overall slope is usually fine, but unevenness is not.

Q. Will an uneven subfloor really void my flooring warranty?

Usually yes. Most manufacturers publish a flatness tolerance, around 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and require it for the warranty. Install over an out-of-spec subfloor and the warranty typically does not apply.

Q. How do you level a floor?

It depends on the problem: self-levelling compound for concrete and large areas, patching for small dips, grinding down high spots, and structural repair for sagging joists. Joey chooses the method after checking the subfloor.

Q. My North Bay house is old. Does the floor definitely need levelling?

Not always, but older homes often do. Joey checks flatness during the free quote and levels only what is actually out of tolerance, so you are not paying for prep you do not need.
